Texas are a Scottish pop band from Bearsden, near Glasgow. Johnny McElhone (formerly of Altered Images and Hipsway) founded the band in 1986, with Sharleen Spiteri on lead vocals. They took their name from the Wim Wenders film Paris, Texas and played their first gig at the University of Dundee in March 1988.

Their 1989 debut album Southside went straight in at number three in the UK. Its lead single, I Don’t Want a Lover, was a hit around the world and reached number eight in the UK.

After Mothers Heaven and Ricks Road, the band hit new heights with White On Blonde in 1997. It went six times platinum in the UK and is still their best-selling album there. Only 2000’s The Greatest Hits has sold as many. The Hush went in at number one and went triple platinum. Careful What You Wish For (2003) and Red Book (2005) both went gold.

After a break, during which Sharleen Spiteri released her solo album Melody (2008), the band returned.
